THE SELF-CUSTODY JOURNAL01 — 04

A BETTER WAY TO BEGIN

Ledger.com/start,
one step at a time.

The setup is straightforward when you take it in order. Here’s the simple path from unboxing to using your wallet with confidence.

01

Start with the device you received

Unbox your hardware wallet and inspect it. A Ledger device should arrive without a pre-filled recovery phrase or PIN. If anything is already set up—or someone asks you to share your recovery phrase—stop and contact Ledger through its official support channels.

02

Install Ledger Live from an official source

Ledger Live is the companion app used to manage accounts and interact with your device. Download it only from Ledger’s official website or the official app store listing. Check the publisher carefully, and avoid links in unsolicited messages or search ads.

03

Choose a PIN only on your device

Follow the on-screen instructions and choose a PIN that is hard to guess. Your PIN protects physical access to the device. Never enter it into a website, share it in a chat, or let another person choose it for you.

↗
04

Write down your recovery phrase offline

Your recovery phrase is the master backup to your wallet. Record it exactly as instructed, keep it private, and store it somewhere secure and offline. Ledger support will never ask you to reveal it. Anyone with this phrase can take control of your assets.

THE GOLDEN RULE

Your recovery phrase
is yours alone.

Think of your recovery phrase as the ultimate key to your crypto. It should never be typed into a computer or phone, photographed, stored in cloud notes, or shared with anyone—not even someone claiming to be support.

Ledger.com/start guidance is educational. For device-specific instructions, always verify details directly on Ledger’s official site ↗.

01Keep it offline

Write it on paper or another durable offline backup.

02Keep it private

Never share it. No legitimate support agent needs it.

03Verify every action

Read transaction details on your device before approving.

03 — LEDGER LIVE

YOUR COMPANION APP

One place to
stay in control.

Once the device is initialized, Ledger Live helps you add accounts, check balances, and manage supported assets alongside your hardware wallet. The app’s exact features can vary by device, region, and software version.

01

Connect your device
Follow the in-app prompts and confirm actions on the hardware wallet itself.

02

Add only the accounts you need
Explore supported networks and review each step before confirming.

03

Keep software current
Use official update prompts and never install files from unknown sources.

QUICK ANSWERS

A few things
worth knowing.

New to Ledger.com/start? Begin here, then refer to Ledger’s official documentation for device-specific details.

Is this the official Ledger setup page?+

No. This is an independent educational guide and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Ledger. For official product support, downloads, and current instructions, visit ledger.com directly.

What does a hardware wallet actually do?+

A hardware wallet keeps private keys protected on a dedicated device, and lets you review and approve transactions. Your crypto assets remain on their respective networks; the device helps secure access to them.

Can I share my recovery phrase with Ledger support?+

No. Never share your recovery phrase with anyone. Anyone who has it can control the associated assets. If you believe it has been exposed, use official support guidance immediately from ledger.com.

Where should I download Ledger Live?+

Use the official Ledger website at ledger.com/ledger-live or a verified official app-store listing. Be cautious of sponsored search results, unsolicited messages, and look-alike websites.
